Facts about Barrow Hill
Barrow Hill is a fascinating village in Derbyshire, located near Chesterfield, and is perhaps most famous for its extraordinary railway heritage. One of the most significant facts about Barrow Hill is that it is home to the Barrow Hill Roundhouse, the last surviving operational railway roundhouse in the United Kingdom with a working turntable. Built in 1870 by the Midland Railway, the roundhouse served as a maintenance depot for steam locomotives and is now an award-winning museum and event venue that attracts railway enthusiasts from all over the world. The village itself was originally built as a model industrial settlement for the workers of the Staveley Coal and Iron Company, reflecting the area’s deep-rooted history in iron production and coal mining. Historically, the Staveley Works was one of the largest industrial complexes in the region, and Barrow Hill was the heart of the community that supported it. The architecture of the village features many traditional Victorian brick terraces, designed to provide high-quality housing for the foundry workers and their families. The geography of the area is Characterised by its proximity to the Chesterfield Canal, which once played a vital role in transporting the iron and coal produced in the local works. Barrow Hill is also located near the Hollingwood Hub, a popular destination on the canal for walkers and boaters. Interestingly, the name Barrow Hill refers to the prominent hill on which the village sits, which was historically believed to be the site of ancient burial mounds or barrows. The local climate is typical of the North Midlands, with moderate rainfall and cool winters that make regular exterior maintenance essential for preserving the historic brickwork and tiled roofs of the village. Barrow Hill remains a vibrant community with a strong sense of its industrial identity, and the roundhouse continues to be a major source of local pride. The village is also known for its local primary school and the St Andrew’s Church, which has served the community for generations. Historically, the area was also a hub for the production of chemical products and iron pipes, industries that helped shape the modern landscape of the Staveley area. Today, Barrow Hill offers a unique blend of historic charm and industrial significance, making it a fascinating place to live and visit. The ongoing preservation of the roundhouse and the surrounding village is a priority for local heritage groups and residents. The mix of historic railway architecture and modern community life makes Barrow Hill one of the most distinctive settlements in Derbyshire.
